Stormwater and Road Management Tunnel (SMART)
Listed by CNN as one of the world’s Top 10 greatest tunnels, the 9.7km dual-purpose SMART is the world’s first traffic and stormwater management tunnel, commissioned by the Government of Malaysia.
The 13.2m-diameter tunnel was constructed with a Slurry Mix-Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) – the latest in Southeast Asia and the second largest in Asia.
Safety systems in the motorway tunnel include Automated Flood Control Gates, eight sets of Air Quality Monitoring Equipment (AQME) that monitor carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide and particulate levels, 24-hour SCADA Monitoring and Surveillance, ventilation and escape shafts as well as firefighting equipment, telecommunications and surveillance systems at every kilometre.

SMART left an indelible legacy on the Malaysian infrastructure engineering landscape when it took the world by storm with its unique concept aimed at solving two of the most critical dilemmas faced by urban cities- traffic and floodwater drainage.
The world’s first dual-purpose 13.2m diameter tunnel was constructed with a Slurry Mix-Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) – the latest in Southeast Asia and the second largest in Asia. The stormwater tunnel length run 9.7km while the double decking motorway length is 3km.
Debuting as the first of its kind, since its opening, flood-prone areas such as Masjid Jamek, Dataran Merdeka, Leboh Ampang and Jalan Melaka have been spared from major floods.
