CIDB, Gamuda IBS collaborate to boost construction productivity

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 13): The Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) through its subsidiary, Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM), has inked a strategic partnership with Gamuda Industrial Building System Sdn Bhd (GIBS) on information research and data sharing to enhance construction productivity in Malaysia.

In a statement, CIDB said both parties will leverage on GIBS’ digital IBS factory, its processes and operations for research, including design in Building Information Modelling (BIM) platform, quantity taking and ordering of materials, robotics manufacturing and digital controls, digital tracking and delivery of panels, pods, and so on, as well as production planning and management and quality of finished products.

“The strategic collaboration between CIDB and GIBS marks a significant step for the Works Ministry, through CIDB, to spur the adoption of the online design tool BIM and Industrialised Building System (IBS) by the housing industry in Malaysia.

“It will help guide government in policymaking and implementation, and prepare the construction sector for a new digital ecosystem, in line with the objectives of Industry4WRD, the national policy for Industry 4.0 and the Construction Industry Transformation Programme 2016-2020 (CITP),” said Works Minister Baru Bian who witnessed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between CREAM and GIBS.

The GIBS operating model will also be benchmarked against local IBS players and overseas precast/ manufacturing/ modular construction companies.

Furthermore, the research sets out to understand and develop a sustainable business model to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in IBS manufacturing, said CIDB.
