Training and Development
Why It Matters
As a key infrastructure builder, Gamuda conducts high-risk and high-skilled construction works at densely populated areas. Therefore safety is important and we need to ensure our workers are well equipped with the specific knowledge and safety awareness to operate at our project sites, and that the level of competency amongst them is consistent. Establishing our own training centres that cater to the specific requirements of our projects have led to increased work efficiency and allowed us to be more professional as we execute the infrastructure projects.
On the ground for our various projects, we strive to equip all our employees with proper and structured training before they begin work as this is important to ensure all the tools, equipment and machineries are operated in a safe manner. Through proper training, we could reduce downtime and maintenance cost while ensuring the smooth operation throughout the project duration.
As a leading infrastructure builder, we provide training and development programmes to reskill and upskill our employees and supply chain regionally. These programmes range from digital to industry and technical competencies, as well as safety awareness, including building specific skills that cater to the requirements of our projects.
Our efforts have increased work productivity and enabled our workforce to remain relevant and competitive in the industry, especially in this tech era.
Gamuda Excellence Transformation (GET) is a one-stop digital enabler and resource for all employees. Equipping our people with the latest technologies and tools – such as generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and cloud – the team is dedicated to driving innovation and excellence across our operations. GET’s mission is to empower every team and individual within the Group to achieve their digital transformation goals.
The Gamuda AI Academy provides world-class training, industry-leading technology, and unparalleled mentorship to help professionals and students master full stack AI. Whether they are curious beginners or have a passion for coding, the Academy is designed to help the workforce build the skills today for tomorrow’s tech jobs.
In 2011, Gamuda set up the world’s first Tunnelling Training Academy, upskilling over 1,500 trainees in this highly specialised field, simultaneously supporting the required specialist skills volume needed to roll-out the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project. The training courses are designed in collaboration with international experts from Siemens, Bosch, and Herrenknecht in Germany. Targeted at young Malaysian graduates or school leavers, it aims to reduce dependence on foreign expertise and build national resilience in the long-term.
The Tunnelling and Infrastructure Academy (TIA) was launched in 2023 in Clyde, Australia, providing a safe and simulated training environment with specialist tunnelling equipment and VR simulators. The TIA upskills our employees and subcontractors in partnership with Registered Training Organisations, Group Training Organisations, universities, schools, and Aboriginal businesses. Over 670 people have enrolled, while 15 have completed the Women in Tunnelling Pre-Employment training.
As sustainable development is becoming increasingly important, we established Malaysia’s first-ever Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course on our Next-Gen Digital Industrialised Building System (Digital IBS) in collaboration with VTAR Institute. The course further advances our commitment to upskilling and investing in local talents.
With Building Information Modelling (BIM) being an award-winning tool, Gamuda set up the BIM Academy to train employees and subcontractors to design and automate our projects using the software.
The Gamuda Learning Centre (GLC) is a centralised learning hub for the Group, which oversees the training and development of all employees, including skills-based, technical training and professional competence. The modern space in the heart of Petaling Jaya is equipped with a computer lab, large classrooms, and hangout spots.
Established in 1997, the Gamuda Plant Operator School (GPOS) streamlines the different competency levels of crane and earthmoving plant operations in Malaysia. Over 42,000 people have been trained at GPOS – as many as 75 percent of Malaysia's certified crane operators.
A pioneering institution to elevate Occupational, Safety and Health (OSH) standards, the KVMRT Safety Training Centre was established in collaboration with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
50,000 trainees have completed the programmes, which are focused on developing skills and competency in high-risk activities, based on the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, Master Trainer Programme and Safety Performance Assessment Scheme.
Our Construction Management Programme (CMP) is offered via the Construction Training Unit (CTU) to boost the quality of our managers by utilising real site work exposure to train young site supervisors and engineers. This programme facilitates training with internationally benchmarked construction skills adopted from the best practices in Australia, Europe and Singapore, and accredited by the CIDB for Civil and Structural or Building and Architectural Works.
The English Language Unit (ELU) was established in 2016 to enhance our employees' English language competency. We primarily conduct training sessions for employees in critical function departments. Additionally, our dedicated digital resource platform, e-Resources for English Language Learning (eRELL), offers a variety of materials for self-learning and continuous language development.
