Gamuda’s extensive experience in constructing rail and metro systems, locally and regionally, has been instrumental in securing the design and build contract for the first civil works package of the Penang Mutiara Line (MTL) in Malaysia.
Through a single-sourcing request for proposal, MRT Mutiara Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MRT Corporation Sdn Bhd awarded the first segment of MTL to SRS Consortium, a joint venture between three parties – Gamuda Berhad (60 percent), Loh Phoy Yen Holdings Sdn Bhd (20 percent) and Ideal Property Development Sdn Bhd (20 percent).
As the main civil contractor, SRS Consortium scope of works encompasses:
- 23.7km elevated viaduct from Komtar to Island A of the Penang South Reclamation (PSR)
- 19 stations (above ground) and one provisional station in Island A of PSR
- A depot at PSR Island A for light and heavy maintenance
- Ancillary structures, at-grade park and ride (AGPR), utilities and services relocations, utility buildings, external surface works, and other associated works
The project is scheduled for completion within six years from the Notice to Proceed. Once operational, MTL will enhance mobility and connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and boost Penang’s economy and tourism while supporting Penang’s comprehensive transportation masterplan and aligning with the Silicon Island initiative to establish Penang as a top destination for high-tech investors.
