Stormwater and Road Management Tunnel (SMART)

Listed by CNN as one of the world’s Top 10 greatest tunnels, the 9.7km dual-purpose SMART is the world’s first traffic and stormwater management tunnel, commissioned by the Government of Malaysia.

The 13.2m-diameter tunnel was constructed with a Slurry Mix-Shield Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) – the latest in Southeast Asia and the second largest in Asia.

Safety systems in the motorway tunnel include Automated Flood Control Gates, eight sets of Air Quality Monitoring Equipment (AQME) that monitor carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide and particulate levels, 24-hour SCADA Monitoring and Surveillance, ventilation and escape shafts as well as firefighting equipment, telecommunications and surveillance systems at every kilometre.

In alignment with the Group’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) approach, we have ventured into new green vertical business, focusing on renewable energy and the circular economy across the region.

Our expanding renewable energy (RE) portfolio includes solar farms, hydroelectric dams, wind turbines, pumped hydro and transmission network upgrades and expansion.

Renewable Energy in Malaysia

In Malaysia, our diversification into the green business began when we entered a Subscription and Shareholders' Agreement with ERS Energy on 7 December 2022. We subscribed for new shares amounting to a 30 percent equity interest in the homegrown solar energy service provider for RM200 million, becoming the largest corporate shareholder.

Both parties are forging a strong collaborative partnership in RE, leveraging each other's expertise and track records. This springboards the Group’s pursuit of wider energy-related opportunities presented by the trajectory of the global energy transition, including energy storage, smart grids and associated infrastructure.

ERS Energy is a leading solar energy EPCC (engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning) company with 13 years’ experience in the industry. It has evolved into a major full-fledged solar turnkey service provider in ASEAN, with more than 695MWp solar capacity installed. ERS Energy is one of the early entrants to the solar scene in Malaysia, with regional presence in Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore.

NEDA39 Solar Farm

The inauguration of our first solar power plant in Neda Pekan sets the stage for a greener, more sustainable future. Upon operation, the 125-acre and 39MWp solar farm is estimated to generate up to 64,000MWh of solar power and RECs annually. Operating under TNB’s New Enhanced Dispatch Arrangement (NEDA) framework, which underlines the Malaysian government’s Corporate Green Power Programme (CGPP), we aim to expand our RE asset portfolio to over 800MW and become Malaysia’s leading private RE producer.

Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Dam

The development of the RM4 billion Ulu Padas Hydroelectric Dam, with a capacity of 187.5 megawatts, holds significant importance in providing a reliable renewable energy source for Sabah. Aimed to be completed by 2029, the hydroelectric dam will spark socio-economic growth along Sabah's western coastal corridor.

The project will seek certification under the internationally recognised Hydropower Sustainability Standard, aligning with 12 sustainability areas – environment, biodiversity, indigenous peoples, water quality, and climate change mitigation.

Gamuda Australia in Energy Transmission

Gamuda Australia is taking the next step in its growth plans by venturing into the energy sector with the long-term goal of being a leading end-to-end developer-builder-owner of assets to accelerate Australia’s clean energy future.

The company is now targeting the AU$328 billion clean energy and renewables infrastructure market, with a strategy that goes beyond construction, to invest up to 40 percent equity in solar and wind assets to build a 1-2GW portfolio within five years. Gamuda will also continue to selectively bid for major EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) contracts in solar, wind, pumped hydro and transmission network upgrades and expansion, fuelled by electricity demand and the transition to renewables.

Gamuda Australia signed a teaming agreement with Rohas Tecnic Berhad (Rohas) to exclusively joint venture together to bid for and build Australian transmission projects.

DT Infrastructure Energy and Water
