MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd (MGKT) has bagged the 44th International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors’ Associations’ (IFAWPCA) builder’s award under the civil engineering construction category.

The award was for the company’s outstanding delivery of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) mass rapid transit (MRT) underground package.

The SBK underground package sets itself apart from other metro projects for its phenomenal scale and use of groundbreaking innovations which were unprecedented in the tunnelling industry.

Most notably is the debut of the world’s first-of-its-kind variable density tunnel boring machine in SBK that overcame tunnelling challenges inherent to Kuala Lumpur (KL) city centre’s complex karstic limestone geology.

Master Builders Association Malaysia immediate past president Datuk Matthew Tee Kai Woon presented the award to MGKT director Chee Weng Loon at the 44th IFAWPCA Convention in KL yesterday.

Chee attributed the winning to team effort, saying that: “The submission highlighted, among others, key achievements in technical innovation and human capital development in tunnelling and precision engineering which saw the successful completion of the SBK Line ahead of time.”

The award also recognises MGKT’s nation-building efforts including programmes such as the Tunnel Training Academy, Young Engineers Programme and the Building Information Management Academy.

Meanwhile, MGKT tunnel GM Ng Hau Wei was conferred the Choi Construction Fieldman Award at the event for his excellent contributions towards the construction industry.

Themed “Strategic Alliance with Innovation and Human Capital”, the focus this year’s convention is on balancing the need for continuous human capital development with the ever-increasing technology drive to elevate the construction industry.

IFAWPCA is a fraternity of builders from 20 member countries in Asian and Western Pacific Region, which plays a critical role in promoting international fellowship and cooperation.
