Gamuda to transform industry
PETALING JAYA: Gamuda’s Industrialised Building System (IBS) is set to transform the image of the construction industry from 3D (Dirty, Dangerous and Difficult) to a clean, efficient industry with shorter construction timelines.
Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia’s (CIDB) chief executive Datuk Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid said Gamuda IBS is in line with the Government’s aspiration to develop the construction industry, according to the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020.
“Gamuda IBS is an example of how technology in construction can enhance productivity, quality and safety levels at a construction site.
“The adoption of technologies and rating tools such as IBS and QLASSIC (Quality Assessment System in Construction) will give property buyers the assurance of superior quality, including for affordable housing,” said Ahmad Asri.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof visited Gamuda IBS, the country’s first fully automated robotic (IBS) factory, yesterday and unveiled two show units that have a QLASSIC score of 86%, the highest for a fully constructed IBS residential unit.
Built at a cost of RM200mil, which includes the cost of the land, Gamuda IBS in Sepang currently has the capacity to produce 3,000 apartment units per year.
Gamuda Bhd is also building a second IBS factory in Banting, which is expected to be ready by end-2018.
Both Gamuda IBS plants will have a combined workforce of 500 and the capacity to produce 8,000 units per year by end-2018.
The workforce at Gamuda IBS will be trained to use IBS technology such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Common Data Environment (CDE), Robotic machine operations, insulation of panels and construction using IBS.
BIM is used to customise designs using 3D software, while the CDE facilitates the sharing of information for multi-stakeholder use on a single digital platform.
